Numicon

We have been exploring Numicon shapes in K2. The students used the shapes to complete a task. They first took 3 shapes out of the feely bag. Screen Shot 2016-09-04 at 12.55.16

They sorted them out by size, the biggest one first, the next size beside it and the smallest one last.  Screen Shot 2016-09-04 at 12.55.23

They calculated what number they had in total and recorded their learning in their Maths Journals. 2f0f149f-8009-4d86-8455-5eb3f21edcaf

The Ugly Duckling

We read the story ‘The Ugly Duckling‘ retold and illustrated by Rachel Isadora. This story is set in the wilds of Africa, where an ugly duckling searches for a place where he can fit in. Isadora’s vibrant collages capture the beauty in everything from glistening feathers to shimmering sunsets. IMG_2304

The students discussed how the duckling felt at different stages of his life and what it means to be different, sad, lonely, cold and without a friend. They chose their favourite part of the story and drew their own picture. Here are a few.

Cat and Dog

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 19.16.39We listened to the story of ‘Cat and Dog‘ by Claire Masurel. In this story a cat and a dog live in the same house, but they are not friends. They fight all the time, about everything. Then disaster strikes. Dog’s beloved ball bounces up into a tree and is stuck. Cat’s precious stuffed mouse falls into the pond. Dog can’t climb. Cat can’t swim. The students enjoyed suggesting solutions to issues and discussing what it means to be ‘caring’.
