A picture of 30

The students created a picture of ’30’ loose parts they found in the playground. While completing this task students:

  • counted objects
  • explored calculation (I have 21, I need 9 more. I have 35, I have too many. I need to take away 5)
  • organised their treasures (materials)
  • developed their creativity
  • explored thier natural environemnt
  • worked with others and supported peers

Sculptures and Creativity

IMG_1190The construction area has been buzzing with activity lately. Students have been creating with blocks, stones, cotton reels and cork. Eliza, a Grade 9 student, came to share her creation with the class. She explained why and how she made her sculpture.

Our wonderings…

  • How long did it take to make it?
  • How was the shape made? What does it mean?
  • How many trees were used to make it?
  • Why does it have that shape?
  • What do the rings mean?

The Weather Graph

IMG_1165 IMG_1168The students recoded the weather daily on their own calendars throughout the month of March. Then we decided to graph the information we had collected. Here is the process they went though:

  • Alice: First we used the scissors to cut the calendar.
  • William: Then we used the ruler to make the straight lines in an ‘L’ shape.
  • Vincent: Then we used the glue to paste the dates. Next we wrote the numbers on the left. We wrote the different types of weather.
  • William: We wrote the name of the graph ‘The Weather Graph for March’.
  • Vincent: Then we wrote our names. Then we wrote the sentence of how many days we had different weather. We wrote what is more and what is least.

Through this learning activity students:

  • collected and organised information
  • asked questions
  • explained data using simple comparative language

Save the Rainforests!!!

We can take ACTION!

Save the Rainforests!!!

Avery feels passionately about the destruction of the rainforests. We decided to watch a video to learn more about the rainforest. She then made a poster and wanted to visit the students in K1, to speak to them about it.

Agency: When students are actively engaged in various stages of learning, including: thinking about, planning, modifying and creating.

The Rocks Mat

We have a new space in the classroom that is getting everyones attention. The ‘Rocks Mat’ is a space where we can build and create with different coloured pebbles and rocks. Its a space where we can use natural materials to explore, shape, size, colour, texture, measurement, pattern and number. Students put together their Essential Agreements.

Morning Jobs

Each morning students store their belongings in their respective spaces in the classroom and prepare for the day. As this job can be challenging for some students, they decided that a ‘To Do’ list would be a good idea. Students brainstormed ideas and created a list. They decided that the title ‘Morning Jobs’ would be appropriate. download (1)IMG_0980

Student-Led Conferences

One of the most important days in an IB school is the day we celebrate learning through Student-Led Conferences.

The students have been busy sorting through their activities, samples of work, writing and photographs, and reflecting on their learning through their portfolios. They share their portfolios with their peers while reflecting on past experiences and learning. They discuss their challenges, exciting moments and share stories of growth.IMG_0863

On this special day students sit with their families and share their personal journeys with pride and confidence. Teachers watch in awe as students take the lead, demonstrating and communicating their greatest achievements and personal stories.
